Greetings! I offer this rare Eb clarinet by Jan Basta of Schönbach u Chebu, which I believe is now in Germany although it was Czech or Bohemia at the time (this region has changed hands many times over the last several centuries, but has long been a center of musical instrument manufacture.)
The bell is marked with an applied brass shield which reads "Jan Basta / Schönbach u Chebu / v Cechách".
Basta was a music retailer who stenciled instruments from other makers and was active from 1883-1908 or so. This is a well-preserved example, and was made playable a number of years ago. It is made of blackwood throughout, with 8 German-silver keys, in
post-and-pin mounts, and one raised tonehole in the archaic fashion of the mid-19th century. The keywork is similar to Müller system.
I'm not certain if it is high-pitch or low-pitch, as I have no Eb clarinet reeds to test-play it with; it
has an overall length from tip of mouthpiece to end of bell of 459mm (18-1/16"
). According to online references, this should pitch the instrument in Eb at High Pitch (A=456vps.)
CONDITION:
Cosmetically very good
overall. It may or may not be playable, as it appears to have had an overhaul sometime in the not-too-distant past. I have no Eb reeds to test-play it, so it would be safe to assume it needs some work to be fully functional. There is what appears to be a very tight crack in the barrel; this does not seem to leak, as I can force no air through it. All the joints can be separated; some may require recorking.
