The Swedish Volunteer Battalion (Swedish Svenska frivilligbataljonen; another name for the Hanko Battalion (Swedish Hangöbataljonen) is a Finnish army battalion that consisted of Swedish volunteers and took part in the Soviet-Finnish war of 1941-1944. Swedes wishing to go to war with the USSR, began to contact the Finnish embassy in Stockholm, the Union of the Swedish Volunteer Corps and the reception room of the Finnish Committee already on June 27, 1941. The Swedish commander-in-chief, General Turnell believed that by participating in the war, Swedish soldiers would gain valuable experience in combat, so he turned to the government with a request allow them to leave the service or take leave so that they can take part in the war on the side of Finland. On July 4, the government decided that such permission could be obtained by 200 career soldiers and 5,000 conscripts.By this time, 1,600 Swedes had already applied for a volunteer recruitment center that had opened in Stockholm. However, due to the requirements (knowledge of military affairs, physical fitness) established by the Finns, from July 18 to October 7, only 2,200 people out of 2,800 who submitted applications were able to pass the selection. Half of the rest were refused by the Swedish authorities.
As the Swedish volunteers arrived in Turku, various divisions of the battalion were formed.
